Advanced NAND Flash Data Retrieval for All SSD Types

A Solid-state drive, more simply referred to as an ‘SSD,’ has no moving parts as its name implies. These storage devices are composed of various types of memory and controller chips mounted on a circuit board.

Data Recovery SOS possesses the knowledge and specialized equipment required to successfully recover data from solid-state drives.

While there are both pros and cons to using an SSD compared to your commonly used mechanical hard drives, both types of drives are still capable of experiencing drive failures. Logical failures or physical-layer failures involving the physical components that make up the device can both occur.

Common SSD Failure Types

Controller Failure & Firmware Panics

The controller (from brands like Phison, Silicon Motion, Marvell, or Samsung) is the "brain" of the SSD. When it fails due to firmware bugs or electrical spikes, the drive may enter a "safe mode" (factory alias), become undetectable, or report the wrong capacity (e.g., 0GB or 32MB). We use specialized chip-off techniques and factory-mode access to bypass the failed controller and read the raw data directly from the memory chips, reconstructing the data algorithmically.

NAND Flash Degradation (Bit Rot)

Flash memory cells (SLC, MLC, TLC, QLC) have a limited number of program/erase cycles. Over time, the oxide layer degrades, leading to charge leakage and bit errors that the drive's ECC (Error Correction Code) can no longer fix. This results in read errors, slow performance, or sudden drive death. Our advanced readers can extract data by adjusting read voltages (Read Retry) to compensate for this degradation and successfully dump the raw NAND content.

Power Loss Corruption & FTL Damage

SSDs rely on a complex Flash Translation Layer (FTL) often stored in volatile DRAM cache to map logical block addresses to physical NAND pages. A sudden power loss can corrupt this mapping table before it's written to non-volatile flash, leaving the drive "bricked" or unable to find your files. We rebuild these translation tables manually using specialized emulation software to restore access to your data structure.

NVMe & PCIe SSD Recovery

Modern laptops and high-performance workstations use NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) SSDs which communicate directly over the PCIe bus, bypassing the legacy SATA bottleneck. However, their complex architecture and high heat generation make recovery challenging. We support all major NVMe form factors including M.2 (2280, 2230), U.2, and PCIe add-in cards from brands like Samsung (970/980/990 Pro), Western Digital (Black/Blue), and Crucial. We have proprietary adapters to interface with these drives even when the standard M.2 connector is damaged.

NVMe SSD Recovery Expertise

NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory express) drives utilize the high-speed PCIe interface, offering significantly higher throughput and lower latency compared to traditional SATA SSDs. However, these performance gains come with unique failure modes. NVMe drives are prone to severe thermal throttling and controller-level firmware corruption due to the high-intensity data transfer rates.

Unique Failure Modes

  • • PCIe Link Training Failures
  • • NVMe Controller Firmware Lock
  • • High-Heat Induced NAND Degradation
  • • Translation Layer (L2P) Corruption

Frequently Asked Questions

TRIM is a command that allows an OS to inform an SSD which blocks are no longer in use. While it improves performance, it makes recovery harder because the controller may physically erase the data. If powered down quickly, we can often bypass this and extract data.
Yes. Controller failure often makes the drive undetectable. We use chip-off techniques to read NAND flash chips directly and reconstruct the data algorithmically.
We support all SSD form factors, including M.2 (SATA & NVMe), and even modern laptops where SSD chips are soldered to the logic board.
